Compatibility with existing TCP/IP systems makes deployment quick and easy. They are highly configurable and customizable, remotely manageable and can be deployed in point to point or multipoint and mesh networks. SkyTCP technology such as fast start, which allows web objects to be fetched in a single round trip, goes a long way in closing the performance gap with terrestrial networking.
Internet protocols do not cope well with the high loss rates and latency of wireless and satellite communication links. As the leading high performance implementation of the Space Communication Protocol Specification – Transport Protocol (SCPS-TP), SkyTCP delivers increased throughput, faster response time and higher efficiency through strained communication links. Its implementation retains TCP/IP compatibility while maintaining an open standard recognized by international standards organizations.
The technology works at the transport layer and in cases where the bandwidth is known, it allows for full link utilization. However, in cases where the bandwidth is unknown, it uses a built in adaptive congestion control based on round-trip time – not just loss-based as TCP does. Doing this provides the most comprehensive implementation, and functionality such as Selective Negative Acknowledgements reacts quicker and more appropriately to loss. Header compression saves bandwidth overhead, which is particularly useful for asymmetric communication links. An easy to use information base provides feedback on the performance of the network.
